Sophomore guard Bria Sneed takes the ball down the court with teammates first-year guard Emily Sells and junior forward Charvonne Long during last Wednesday’s game against Transylvania University. The Quakers fought hard but lost a close game 84-80. The next home game is Saturday, Feb. 11, at 3 pm against College of Mount St. Joseph.
On Wednesday, Feb. 1, the Earlham Quakers women’s basketball team suffered an 84-80 loss against the Transylvania University Pioneers (10-10, 8-5). The hard-fought contest brought the team’s record to 3-17 (1-12).
Sophomore Bria Sneed led the Quakers, scoring 20 points along with five assists. Junior Karmell Brown also scored 12 points and contributed five rebounds. Senior Nikki Darrett and freshman Emily Sells both scored 11 points each, while junior Charvonne Long added 10 points of her own. Sells led the team in assists and rebounds, with six and seven respectively.
Helped by the early scoring of Sneed and Darrett, the Quakers jumped out to a 20-6 lead with 14:04 remaining in the first half. This would be their largest lead of the game. Transylvania battled back to bring themselves within five points with about nine minutes to go, the score at 31-26. After a couple of scoring runs, the Pioneers had tied the game at 47-47. At the end of the half, the score was 54-50 in favor of Transylvania.
After a three-point play by Brown, the Quakers took a 61-59 lead with 13 minutes remaining, but Transylvania responded with an 8-0 run to put the score at 67-61 in their favor. Sneed fired back with five quick points of her own to pull the Quakers within one point, making it 67-66. After several lead changes, Transylvania was still up three points with six minutes remaining, and the score at 79-76.
Sneed fouled out with 5:38 remaining in the game. After a run of missed baskets by both squads, the Pioneers connected on a three-pointer and a lay-up to put them ahead 84-76 with 1:50 remaining. This put the game out of reach for the Quakers, leaving the final result at 84-80 after some late shots by Sells and Darrett.
