Freshman midfielder/forward Joy Doucette of the women’s soccer team was honored by the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC), winning Player of the Week for her performance last Saturday against Kenyon College and Ohio Wesleyan University (OWU). She scored the only goal in Earlham’s overtime tie against Kenyon last Tuesday, as well as the first goal against OWU. Doucette finished her first regular season at Earlham with six goals and five assists. She also provided the lone spark for the offense on Tuesday.

“I was just working for my team and that’s just a great award to get,” said Doucette.

She also honored the seniors for helping her adjust to college life.

“The seniors have definitely taught me to never give up, work hard, push through everything, like preseason 6 a.m. practices — it’s just the beginning.  You have to push through it and they showed a lot of heart. They really got me through the season, and we’re really gonna miss them; they contribute a lot to the team.”

Junior nose guard Chad Wertman (75) was honored by the NCAC last Sunday with Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against Kenyon College. Last Saturday at Kenyon after losing to Oberlin College the previous week, the Quakers battled against the Lords and defeated them 21-9.

Wertman finished the game with 11 tackles, a high number for a defensive player in one game. One of his tackles was a quarterback sack.

“The 11 tackles were a defensive line team high, but usually [Adam] LaFollete and Cale [Gulliford] get around that number almost every game,” he commented.

Wertman found out that he received this honor on Sunday night through head coach Gerry Keesling. This marks the first time Wertman has received this honor for football, but he received Athlete of the Week last spring as a thrower on the men’s track team. The Quakers compete in two more conference games this season. They will play at Ohio Wesleyan University tomorrow, and next week they will be away at Denison University.
