Center issues call to writers

You are indubitably a writer; prove it to the world

by Micah Sommer

Are you a writer? The answer is indubitably “yes,” whether you consider yourself one or not. On behalf of Earlham’s Writing Center, let me invite you to take part in an exciting opportunity to showcase your writing to the world.

The fact is that in today’s society everybody writes, whether it is academic papers, reports, or even texts and IMs to friends. To highlight writing’s importance, the U.S. Senate has designated Oct. 20 as the National Day on Writing, and while that date has passed, it only marks the beginning of this opportunity.

The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) has organized a National Gallery of Writing at http://www.galleryofwriting.org that opened on Oct. 20 and will remain open until June 1, 2010. The gallery is open to everyone’s contributions, and describes itself as “a virtual space … where people who perhaps have never thought of themselves as writers … select and post writing that is important to them.”

People who have “never thought of themselves as writers”? I would guess that more than a few Earlham students, and maybe even some faculty members, fall into this category! But we all are writers, and NCTE wants to hear from all of us! “The Gallery accommodates any composition format — from word processing to photography, audio/video recording to text messages — and all types of writing — from letters to lists, memoirs to memos.”

So what are you waiting for? Dig up something you’ve written that you’re especially proud of or sit down and write that poem, essay, story or letter that you’ve always wanted to write, and share it with the world!

The Writing Center especially invites you to contribute to our local gallery, in which we ask not just Earlham students but also faculty and staff to contribute writing that connects to our Principles and Practices: anything that touches on the idea of respect, equality, peace and justice, simplicity, or consensus is welcome.

Your only limitation is that, since the gallery will be open for everyone to read, it must be at least somewhat family-friendly. Submit your compositions at http://www.galleryofwriting.org/contribute.php or visit Earlham’s Writing Center in the Lilly Library basement for much more information on this exciting initiative.
